چکیده

The internet was designed with host-oriented networking applications such as file transfer and remote login. However, recent internet statistics show that content-oriented traffic (e.g. web pages, multimedia clips) becomes more and more dominant. Even though content-oriented networking has received increasing attention, there have been few comprehensive and quantitative studies on how to realize a content-oriented networking framework. In this paper, we focus on the operational issues of the new networking framework: (i) how to locate contents, (ii) how to deliver contents, and (iii) how to cache contents. There are two major infrastructure alternatives in substantiating these mechanisms: a tree and a distributed hash table (DHT). We carry out comprehensive simulation experiments to compare these alternatives in terms of content transfer latency, cache effectiveness, and failure resilience.

Evaluation of hierarchical DHTs to mitigate churn effects in mobile networks

Existing flat peer-to-peer (P2P) systems based on distributed hash tables (DHTs) perform unsatisfactorily under churn due to their non-hierarchical topology. These flat DHTs (FDHTs) experience low lookup success ratio, high lookup latency and high bandwidth usage as a consequence of the presence of churn. With this, we explore the use of hierarchical DHT (HDHT), specifically the superpeer desig...

Survey on hierarchical routing schemes in "flat" distributed hash tables

The first generation of DHT designs offered a completely flat structure of the key space that is randomly partitioned among participating DHT nodes. That has certain advantages, for example, even distribution of workload among nodes. On the other hand, grouping keys under a single authority or achieving latency guarantees for queries is difficult. To address these shortcomings, various kinds of...

Hierarchical architectures in structured peer-to-peer overlay networks

Distributed Hash Tables (DHT) are presently used in several large-scale systems in the Internet and envisaged as a key mechanism to provide identifier-locator separation for mobile hosts in Future Internet. Such P2P-based systems become increasingly complex serving popular social networking, resource sharing applications, and Internet-scale infrastructures. Hierarchy is a standard mechanism for...

Evaluating and improving the content access in KAD

We analyze in detail the content retrieval process in kad. kad implements content search (publish and retrieval) functions that use the Kademlia Distributed Hash Table for content routing. Node churn is quite common in peer-to-peer systems and results in information loss and stale routing table entries. To deal with node churn, kad issues parallel route requests and publishes multiple redundant...

GTPP: General Truncated Pyramid Peer-to-Peer Architecture over Structured DHT Networks

Abstract— Hierarchical Distributed Hash Table (DHT) architectures have been among the most interesting research topics since the birth of flat DHT architecture. However, most of the previous work has merely focused on the two-tier hierarchy. In this paper, we study and analyze General Truncated Pyramid Peer-to-Peer (GTPP) architecture, the generalized version of Partially Vertical Hierarchical ...
